Science and education 1950 up to 2000

Professional schools in Wismar, Heiligendamm, Rostock and Wustrow were technically distinguished. The university received a technical shipbuilding faculty. Pedagogical colleges in Schwerin, Güstrow and Neubrandenburg trained teachers for polytechnics and extended secondary schools.

From 1990 education and science in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania were restructured. School structures were changed several times. The Paedagogiums were closed. Güstrow, Schwerin and Neubrandenburg received new colleges. The number of people working in colleges had fallen by 1992 from 141,000 to 25,000.

An outstanding achievement was the redevelopment and new construction of the Katharinenstift in Rostock into the University of Music and Theatre.

A student strike prevents the conversion of the medical faculty into an academy of military medicine in 1955. But a department of military medicine, operated by the People's National Army (NVA), opens nevertheless. It is disbanded in 1989 and reconstituted as a private clinic.
Educationalists study at the Putbus Institute of Teacher Training until 1975.

The GDR naval university in Stralsund is named after Karl Liebknecht in 1960. It remains in operation until 1990.

The University of Applied Sciences, Stralsund, opens in 1991; it has three schools offering courses in electrical engineering and computer science, mechanical engineering and business studies.

49.9 per cent vote in favour of retaining the name 'Ernst Moritz Arndt University' in a strike ballot held in 2010. 43.4 percent reject the name. 22 delegates on the Academic Senate of the University vote in favour, while 14 vote against.
