The model of the PPM-2 landmine was developed in the GDR and was used for training purposes. GDR border guards laid this type of mine on the inner German border between 1977 and 1985. From as early as 1961 GDR soldiers arranged enclosed and marked minefields in sections of the inner German border that were particularly susceptible to being used as escape routes. In several cases escapees were seriously injured or killed by mines.

Maintaining the mines laid underground required a lot of effort. The PPM-2 landmine could be laid and cleared mechanically and had a life span of five years. 130 grams of TNT were used as the explosive substance.
