Religion 1800 up to 1850

Großherzog Paul Friedrich I.
Paul Friedrich I. of Mecklenburg-Schwerin

During the Napoleonic occupation all religions were equalised in Mecklenburg in 1811. In 1813 Frederick Francis I. revoked the protected status of the Jews and put them on an equal footing with natives. Yet the law only lasted for two years.

The status of the Protestant church remained largely unchanged into the 19th century. In 1837 Grand Duke Paul Frederick (1800-1842) enforced full control of the church, and a comprehensive reporting system for priests based on standard questions was introduced.

Frederick Wilhelm III. of Prussia issues an edict in 1812, allowing members of the Jewish community to settle where they please, choose their professions and purchase property. Jews now live in all of the major towns in Pomerania. A Jewish religious society is established in 1816, forming the nucleus for the Jewish community that emerges some time later.

The status of the Protestant church remained largely unchanged.
