The first writings on the use of wood in the new consideration of nature did not include any rules on reforestation. There seemed to be a limitless supply. Johannes Coler was considered to be the first author of a form of “forest teaching” in Mecklenburg.

Entire forests are chopped down and turned into palisades or firewood during the conquest of Pomerania by the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf. Landscapes are flattened during sieges to clear the line of fire.
