The main sources of income for the Slavic population were arable farming and livestock farming on cleared settlement isles, preferably on light ground. The proportion of populated and cultivated surfaces across the whole area was low. Light ground was preferred for rye farming. Multi-field farming and the wooden scratch plough pulled by oxen were known.
