Hans Metzger: The earthly and celestial court

Duke Ulrich of Mecklenburg commissioned the picture that was formerly located in Güstrow town hall. The right side of the picture depicts a meeting of the manorial court under the chair of Duke Ulrich; the left side shows the newest court. The latter aimed to remind those present that they would one day have to account for their actions. The biblical quotations warn the judges to ensure that justice is served regardless of the person’s status. The painting impressively shows Ulrich’s leading position as the ruler of the state and church.
