In 1654 Duke Gustav Adolf took over the government in Güstrow. During his rule the residence became a centre of court culture. In 1657 he brought Charles Philippe Dieussart, the architect and sculptor, to his court. The baroque gatehouse and access bridge to the palace were created under his leadership. Gustav Adolf had a particular interest in music and literature. He also modernised the administration and supported the schools in the state. His particular concern was the development of the national church.
