Immigrants from the west brought a new type of architecture into the country. The available granite stones and fired bricks were used to create basilicas and hall churches initially still in the Roman style. Particular attention was accorded to the artistic design of baptismal fonts, some of which were imported from Scandinavia.

The oldest buildings are in Cammin or in Altenkirchen, Schaprode and Bergen on the island of Rügen.
