In 1914 one of the largest prisoner of war camps in Germany, with a capacity of up to 25,000 prisoners, was built on the outskirts of Parchim on the former cavalry parade ground. At times 15,000 prisoners of war from Russia, France, Belgium, Serbia and England were detained here. 1,402 of them died here. The camp was closed down in 1921. The tarpaulin is a unique document of life in the camp.
