Prayer box (tefillin)

Gebetskapsel (Tefillin)
360° Ansicht
  • black covered vellum, linen, Waren, 18./early 19. century, height: 5.5 cm

During religious services Jewish men wear a prayer shawl (tallit) and attach prayer boxes to the upper left arm and forehead with a tefillin. The hand tefillin and head tefillin contain four excerpts from the Tora that are written on small scrolls of parchment, which are rolled up and placed into the four compartments in the tefillin. They aim to serve as a constant reminder to have clear thoughts in the head and do good deeds with the hand. This prayer box was handed down in Waren.
