Megaloceros horns

Bild
  • span: 3.08 m

The Megaloceros giganteus is a representative of the large mammals after the ice age. After the enormous glaciers covering large parts of Europe had melted, representatives of this species also lived in our region and roamed the cold steppes. They fed on the lush range of grasses and herbs with a high mineral content. Increasing climate warming initiated a change in vegetation. In central Europe steppes were increasingly displaced by forest and, along with it, the mammals of the ice age.

The gigantic horns with a weight of approx. 40 kg were found on an Irish moor.
