Christian families were generally accepted as a way of life. Superstitious beliefs remained at a rudimentary level among the population and arose from Slavic observations of nature and the uneducated belief in miracles. As a counter measure the church developed the persecution of “witches” and “wizards”, who could be convicted on the basis of denunciation to death by burning. In 1336 the first “witch trial” was held in Mecklenburg.
