Duke Charles II. of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and his cousin Frederick Francis I. were enlightened regents. They both acquired the status of Grand Duke in 1815 after the victory over Napoleon. Two of Duke Charles’ daughters became queens. Luise married Frederick William of Prussia in 1793 and, two days later, Friederike married his brother Frederick Ludwig. Luise died in 1810 in Hohenzieritz. In 1837 Friederike became Queen of Hannover. Her brother George took over the regency in Neustrelitz in 1816. Grand Duke Paul Friedrich, a grandson of Frederick Francis I., moved the residence back to Schwerin in 1837.
