In 1764 the village of Klenow was developed into the residence of Mecklenburg-Schwerin by Duke “Frederick the Pious”, and named Ludwigslust after his father, Christian Ludwig II. The new castle was completed in 1776. Following his death in 1785 his nephew took over the throne at the age of 29 and became Frederick Francis I. Adolphus Frederick IV. ruled in Mecklenburg-Strelitz from 1752-1794; Fritz Reuter ridiculed him as a “Dörchlaeuchting”. He commissioned a city palace in Neubrandenburg where he spent most of his time. His sister, Sophie Charlotte, became English queen in 1761.
