When Fritz Reuter died in 1874, the Stavenhagen municipality wanted to create a memorial for the town’s famous son. Stavenhagen started up a collection and received donations from Reuter friends and Low German associations from around the world. The Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Frederick Francis IV., also ultimately supported the plan. With this Schwerin patronage a competition was launched. 92 artists took part in the competition, which was won by Wilhelm Wandschneider from Plau.
