When he was a young secondary school teacher Kakuji Watanabe, a Japanese Germanist born in 1902, became interested in Fritz Reuter and his poems. He compiled dictionaries, published an “Introduction to Low German” and a comprehensive paper on Fritz Reuter‘s poems. In 1938 he published his translation of the story “During the Time of the French Conquest,” which is one of the most curious forms of the popularity and worldwide reception of Reuter’s work.
