Creeping ivy in front of the patio on Gerhart Hauptmann's summer house, Hiddensee

A special type of creeping ivy grows on the patio of Gerhart Hauptmann's summer house. It was brought here from George Washington's country estate in Mount Vernon, USA. Hauptmann was given a shoot from the plant during his major trip through America in 1932. He travelled to Hiddensee immediately after returning to Europe. The shoot was planted and became a signature feature of the house. It also grows on Gerhart Hauptmann's grave in the island cemetery.
