Friedrich Griese (1890-1975) was the most significant writer in Mecklenburg during the first half of the 20th century. He lived near Parchim from 1935 and built a house there. He wrote tales and novels in simple, powerful language and turned the affinity between people and their country in the ups and down of nature into a theme. His literature was primarily influenced by Scandinavian authors such as Knut Hamsun and Selma Lagerlöff.
He was regarded as a “blood and soil poet” by the National Socialists although he did not actually embody this ideology. In 1947 he fled to the West after a prison sentence.
